"I'd like to draw attention to the fact that this issue had become international focus back in 2006 and 2007 when the Singur and Nandigram agitations had erupted. In many ways, it is interesting that on May 20th, when Mamata Banerjee will be inaugrated as the first woman CM of Bengal and as someone who as swept away 34 years of Left front rule and it is ironic that at that time both national media and political parties across the spectrum had dismissed her as merely a spoiler, someone who was playing agitational politics for narrow political gains. What they did not understand was she had intuited the inherent injustice in the processes through which land was being acquired for industrialisation and public interest projects. That essential injustice has played itself out endlessly in these last five years in conflicts that have erupted between people and state across the country."

In this editorial, Shoma talks about Land Wars from all across India. She points out how over the years, all political parties have been guilty of acquiring land by force, and the way forward is using a just process of consensus and consultation.

  • This is really great info. I think proposed draft bill which addresses the issues raised by you. However I feel following points would be helpful.

In General, all the amount mentioned in the act should be indexed to Consumer Price Index and Annual interest specified in terms of PLR rate.

This will ensure the purpose of amt (either deterrent or rwd) would have intended meaning even after considerable passage of time.

20% land shld be rtned at aqu.rate in midc , sez for skill based ecnmy

  • i can easily guess you are pro-congress and trying to bring illogical ideas to support them...... all of know what they are ..

    BUT,

on this land acquisition case, i completely agree with you...

I see the lower class guys working the way they do, and i really feel so guilty of not able to do much about it.

  • A good primer to the Land Grab Scam.

  • I feel that we are still living in slavery days as no laws have been changed by this congress govt. which ruled us the most. These laws have been enforced by Britishers and are still carrying on SAD IS IT NOT. NO MEDIA HAS EVER RAISED IT. We including media have become so corrupt that for our interest we shall eat into land of poor trodden people to become rich in name of development. Poor kisan ,poor adivasis , poor tribals fight for it and govt. uses force of trained police to take it .

  • Thanks a ton Shoma...you have opened my mind!

  • Madam please note that in 1855 the East India Company declared war against the Santal nation and 20000 Santals were slaughtered. Resistance to land grabbing did not start with Mamta. The Tata landmines Adivasis in Kalinga nagar was largely ignored by the civil society and media. Please give the heroic Adivasis their due in defending land right much before not only Mamta but Mahatma Gandhi was born
