Test details:

The Land Rover Discovery was re-engineered during the 1999 model year and renamed the Discovery Series II. The size of the cargo area was increased, and for all 1999 and later models manufactured after October 1998, the vehicle was structurally modified to improve occupant protection in frontal crashes. (Note: Information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door.)

The Institute has evaluated the crashworthiness of a 1999 Discovery Series II with the structural changes in a 40 mph frontal offset crash test into a deformable barrier.

Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head tilted toward the driver door and then hit the B-pillar as it continued moving rearward. There was too much upward movement of the steering wheel.

Injury measures — Measures taken from the head, neck, and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on both tibias indicate that injuries to the lower legs would be possible. Acceleration on the left foot indicate that injuries to the foot would also be possible. Head acceleration from the B-pillar hit was low.

  • would do better with an arb bull bar. :)

  • that was really good considering the 4750 pounds it weighs. Passenger compartments look reasonable afterwards. all in all a safe car but maybe not on a roll over

  • i doubt it will look this bad if it crashes into a smaller car. the other car though

  • @vladika07 Volvo xc90 is not a body-on-frame 4wd which makes a huge difference. If the disco had a bullbar it would have done better

  • @lucasfan18 it may roll easier but it do just as well as if not better than any other car on the road in protecting you.

  • not bad, with over 4500LB pulverizes a sedan

  • I just crash one of this and the air bag, never works.... Take cate with that!!!!

I like them, but are not safe!!!!

  • @lucasfan18 it would be just a safe in a rollover as any car

  • @uncaljeff maybe, my friend saw one with a brushguard on it, and a car came and hit it, it smashed up the car, but the truck was scratchless

  • Shite

  • Terrible, compare this to Volvo xc90 test
