I was born in 1982, so I'm 28 and clearly wasn't around for The Jack Benny Show.
Thank goodness for PBS. I was a teenager when they ran these episodes on WLIW out here in New York, & if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't know a thing about Benny, early Carson, Carol Burnette, Bob Hope, Rickles, I mean, the list goes on! These comedians today are just vile! They've NO CLASS, like these ladies & fellas did.
So, an even bigger reason to support your local public television stations, folks. :)

I'm Mexican, too (100%) and I love it, too!! You're so right, many over-sensitive people feel like they need to be offended for the other races. I find it irritating, We can speak for ourselves...and we just did! :-)

From 1948 through '67, Jack and Mel did a variation of this routine several times every season on radio, and then TV. And EVERY TIME, Jack tried NOT to crack up when he looked into Mel's face. That deadpan expression of his was one reason why Benny couldn't resist laughing [a good example is when they did it during an October 3, 1954 radio parody of "Garden Of Evil"- you can HEAR the pauses where Jack is trying NOT to laugh, and he almost "loses" it at one point, but stays in character].

Jack Benny married Mary Livingstone on January 14, 1927. Mary appeared in many of Jack's programs.
