Navy sonar harms whales and dolphins. Check out this video and hear what it sounds like, and see what it does to these marine mammals. Earthjustice is working to get the Navy to use their sonar in places where it won't harm whales and dolphins.

Active sonar must be completely stopped. It affects whales in much wider ranges through hundreds of miles, too. This technique is torture to the animals and any human diver, too. Help my campaign to stop active sonar.
Hi, My name is wade and i am an acoustic warfare anylist in the royal australian navy. I agree the environment must be considered when transmitting on active sonar. However the thought of eliminating the use of active sonar as an acoustic warfare deterant fills me with much fear. As a part of the submarine community we pride ourselves on our ability to be very quite (passive). This means a nuclear ballistic missile platform could operate around the world un-noticed..and THAT is a scary sound
I know there are two kinds of sonar: active and passive. I thought active sonar (a submarine sending a "ping" to detect an enemy sub or surface vessal) is virtually obsolete because the technology of a submarine detecting a ping automatically discloses the position of the sub sending the original ping. Also, technology in passive sonar and listening for enemy subs through mechanical sounds they emit is so far advanced. Therefore, WHY IS ACTIVE SONAR STILL USED???
Its because surface Vessels would be hard pressed to detect a submarine on passive sonar because of something called "Self Noise" and also something called "Flow noise" Which makes it almost impossible to detect a sub-surface contact If the ship itself is travelling over 15 knots. SO.. active sonar can still be utilised at speed, and when you are attempting to evade an underwater threat.. SPEED, is your best freind..... Trust me, if it were not needed it would not be used.
I agree. A lot of animal activists would consider this cruelty, in a way it is but technology can take us so far and I believe the Navy is doing it for a greater cause than killing animals the Navy is doing it for us to keep us safe from threat while we sleep comfortably in our houses. I wouldn't want to sleep one day and the next thing I know the US gets bombed or something, I bet neither would you. I love animals too but in order to keep everyone safe we have to work with what we have :'(
For years whales have been beaching themselves and the navy and others have said they don't know the reason. That's a lie. I hope someone or something can stop these death merchants before they kill again. Sonar IS torture.
Nothing I said was classified, I verified everything against Wikipedia and official Oceanographic-oriented websites before I commented. I just removed my comments because they didn't really pertain to the video, but rather towards some guys misinformed mind.
