  • Actually, maple is harder and stronger than oak. Just saying. That's curly maple. The neck should be made of hickory perhaps, to be stronger (hickory is the hardest native saw lumber). Even harder and stronger would be black or honey locus. I believe mesquite is also exceptionally strong, but it is a shrub bush and doesn't grow large enough to make a saw logs. There are non-native species that are much harder and stronger and perhaps one of these would be stonger enough to extend the lifespan.
