    Yes, that did break him of his addiction, but the song itself isn't about his friend Hillel dying or breaking the addiction. It's about the feeling he had during his addiction, and how glad he is he's in a better place now.

    The song isn't about Hillel dying though. It's about Anthony feeling very lonely sometimes during his addiction, and him walking downtown at night with his Mexican buddy. Under a bridge downtown he had to pretend to be someone else to get heroin, so he had to give his life away. That is ne of the lowest points he reached, so he never wanted to feel like that again. And the place he loves is the place he was when he wrote the song, with his best friends making great music.
