Dame Myra Hess was one of the greatest pianist of all times and she usually had a score at the keyboard Her recording of the Beethoven Appassionata is awesome and much admired by great pianists
Comment on THIS VIDEO: I thought it was played about 20% too fast. Took off like hounds on a rabbit and about 1/2 way I give up--Couldn't hear the harmonies any more. Sad.
On the point, I can't really cite specific autograph documents but his piano works are good evidence of the technical skill he had. I'm pretty sure Schumann's music newspaper-thing has some record of his technical skill as well.
Just that Horowitz is on a different level I think. I don't wanna sound bias or an cruel, but certain things you hear once in a lifetime. Horowitz 1930s was just that. So is this, just... to a lesser degree.
