SALVATION
Elton John
Honky Chateau (1972)

I have to say my friends
This road goes a long, long way
And if we're going to find the end
We're gonna need a helping hand

I have to say my friends
We're looking for a light ahead
In the distance a candle burns
Salvation keeps the hungry children fed

It's gotta take a lot of salvation
What we need are willing hands
You must feel the sweat in your eyes
You must understand salvation

A chance to put the devil down
Without the fear of hell
Salvation spreads the gospel round
And free you from yourself

    But Ringo sang shitty songs.

  • "...and if we're gonna find the end we're gonna need a helpin' hand"

"In the distance a candle burns, Salvation keeps the hungry children fed"

So poignant. Whether you believe in a higher power or not...This song is about staying together and helping eachother. Elton and Bernie had important things to say.

  • @mrnmrsyounger : and has been with him ever since.

  • Love the "McCartney (Sgt. Pepper) like" bass fills....Dee Murray had a great style...RIP

  • You can't fault the high quality of melodies, songwriting and production on the Honky Chateau album.

  • @mactheartofwarfare ...he played on Madman, then was asked to actually join the band on Honky Chateau.

  • @mrnmrsyounger No it was on madman across the water when he joined

  • Davey joined the band on this album

  • I seem to recall "The Elton John Band" being on a 45 rpm of "Philadelphia Freedom," which would slightly predate ROTW. I associate the name more with the Dee Murray & Nigel Olsson line-up than I do with the Passarelli & Pope (et al.) line-up; but perhaps the name was used through Blue Moves, after which I'm pretty sure the stable back-up band and the Taupin association were largely ditched.
