Love my Bose 901 series 6 hooked to a Crown XLS 2500 amp bought at 19 now 22 (possibly the youngest 901 owner on the planet) just LOVE them very upset at the horrible hype these get as the 901 is as lifelike as it gets and has exceptionally powerful highs and lows and just shake the house (of course must be set right or they won't) my only problem is 440 watts per speaker is Not loud enough so i'm going to get more!! everyone who has ever heard my 901 has made the same comment best speaker ever!
the older bose 901's were better, a friend of mine just bought new ones, we hooked them up (both pairs) w/ a good solid amp, did a/b comparisons w/ the same material, source component, cables, pre/pow amp, room and the older ones won (the new ones are broken in) then we hooked them up with a cheap 700.00 dollar ht reciever from best buy and both pairs sounded like garbage( we ran 700 dollar unit in 5.1 mode & 2.0 mode with good material & they just sounded dull no matter what we tried.
I heard a factory demo of Bose 901 at Elmendorf AFB around 1976. I went back to my barracks and listened to my cheap Fisher speakers and heard just as much, if not more, and the electronics I used were below the demo units in quality. J. Gordon Holt did a review of the 901 for Stereophile not long after my audition, and his review was so bad for the 901 that Bose pulled all their adverstising from Stereophile and threatened a lawsuit. Bose is a marketing company, NOT a builder of fine audio gear
Ive had two sets of bose 901's and they have there good points and bad ones. Its all about what type of music you listen to when you play them.Whatever type of music you listen to i can say this is the further back you are from them, the better they sound. You just dont get the extreme highs or the extreme lows that you get with an good pair of speakers. They do however sound like you are at a live show which bose always hyped.I will stick with my pioneer hpm's which have better highs and lows.
Bose seems to be the popular target for noobie audiophiles now a days. Now, I do agree that modern Bose products are overpriced, but by no means sound terrible. Some Bose products sound pretty decent & their small footrpint make them desirable for the average consumer.Thats all good with me, if someone is willing to pay them more power to Bose. That said, these vintage 901's are actually pretty nice. They require alot of power & are picky about placement, but they do sound incredible when honed in
