During the landing of STS-3 (3/30/1982) at White Sands NM the pilot lifted the nose during roll out. This may have been due to the somatogravic illusion, where pilots perceive a strong nose down pitch due to the summation of deceleration with the gravitational vector (see our accompanying animation 'somatogravic illusion during landing').

  • enough to cause significant damage to the landing gear

  • what aload of bollocks ssm98,,, high speed landings can cause severe vibration on the nose wheel, we pilots somtimes lift the wheels and then set back down to stop this!!!

  • @mph7

LOL - you must be some pilot

  • For you all spacenautics engineers... Take a look at the vertical stabilizer, and what happenes there just when the nose starts to lift? SPEED BRAKE OPENS... Yes.. That causes drag, and lift for the nose.

  • @mph7 So you've flown the Space Shuttle? Doofus!

  • Hey, he landed the fuckin' space shuttle. What do guys want?

  • @mph7 "bollocks" well from that your a limey so its clear to the rest of us that you dont know shit ! I heard Gorgon Fullerton give a lecture in 2005 and talk about this incident there was no "severe vibrations" He said Jack Lousma indused PIO when he was hamfisted on the stick because the dampners had not been set yet Fullerton tells Lousma over the intercom to "Get off the stick and see if it dampens" and it did."We pilots" Ha Ha pilot in your dreams worry more about your poor dental hygene !

  • he only tried to derotate smoothly and overcontrolled just a little bit causing the nose to pitch back up, he then applied forward pressure and conducted a normal derotation. No PIO to me.

  • To think that this guy is apparently the best of the best of the test pilots.

  • Good old Columbia.

  • @LimpJimmy He pitched up just before the nose touched down.
