While visiting an old fortress from the slave-trade era in Ghana, Mona (Oyafunmike Ogunlano) encounters a colorful local character, an elderly mystic going by the name of Sankofa. Mona is a black American model visiting the country for a photo-session. The old man claims to be in contact with spirits, and she is intrigued by this. When she goes to visit him, she suddenly finds herself back in the old slavery days, a slave herself who is captured and shipped to a sugar planation in the American south. There, she has various relationships and adventures in the build-up to participating in a slave revolt. Just as that is getting fully underway, she finds herself back in the present, deeply affected by what has gone before. The old mystic's name is a word in the Akan language which has the complex meaning of "going to the past, remembering it, and with it, turning to the future." ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

  • @htownforever0510 Way shorter.

  • POWERFUL....

  • Totally in tears right now. :'(

  • lovely and moving!however the start & ending promotes racial isolation, which is unfortunate.so she's meant to shun or despise white ppl now cause she's seen what went on in the past?in the beginning everybody was happy inc.her, except the old man,who held on to his grudge and passed it on to her & the others, preventing them from enjoying the conditions all the slaves dreamt about achieving(respectful coexistence)& sowing the seeds for disturbing that coexistence this time from the other side!

  • @shomaneture Today's Blacks? Really? They are too busy watchin Rhianna & JayZ videos, basketball wives, real housewives of ATL etc. and praying at the altar of Obama.

  • I saw this movie in Richmond Va in 1993. Although parts of it is cut out that is shown here on YouTube it is still after all these years the most accurate account of Slavery Ideation and what happen in those times. Only in 1993 all the wp ran up out of the movies as they got enough courage to leave once the movie was on the way playing. They later had this movie banned as racial hatred for fear it would cause a riot. This movie stop and started fights in Richmond but I remember how fast it was
