  • They have to move the 611 occaisionally to keep it "roadworthy". The wheels will develop flat spots from sitting in one place too long. It would be very expensive to have to take all the wheels off and have them "trued" again. The 611 had just been re-fitted when the NS bastards cancelled the steam excursion program in the 90's. Its actually in great shape. They keep it in the best shape possible so it can easily be reactivated if NS ever changes its mind. I hope they do.

  • *Chuckles* Well I was the guy who operated the brakes and bell for the day, it was kinda fun, and we rolled a good twenty feet at least

  • I think that's how they moved it.

  • It would be nothing short of a miraculous occasion if the 1218 could steam again; as of the present, its boiler is a hollow shell, and a number of components are missing. When I was there a few years ago, a volunteer let me look through the firebox doors, and it wasn't a pretty sight.

  • Norfolk Southern. The current CEO Wick Mooreman is a much nicer person than David Goode, the bastard who ended the steam program, but it's also up to Norfolk Southern's board of directors and even if Mr. Mooreman wanted to, he himself couldn't bring the steam program back without their consent. I hope it happens one day, but I am not counting on it at all. I'm sure the curators at the VMT would love to have 611 and 1218 be able to steam again, but until policies change, they will stay parked.

  • So the NS is in charge of whether or not the 611 runs again? Or is it the actual museum itself?

  • becuz people were pulling it and the engine is not live...they were just eseeing if it would still roll

  • streamlined engines don't have string bells. secondly it's hard to get wheelslip from anything besides the other engine or people pulling it. third air pressure builds in the cylinders over time and did he not say that he was operating the brakes because they are air brakes. there were people pulling it. just to answer all your questions.

  • Poor video.

    Shows nothing

    Explains nothing.

    Were people pulling it?

    Why not shown?

    How many people?

Was the bell operated or someone manually ringing it?

  • Thanks :) And im happy to hear, I will have to look

  • That is showing what is happening, all it was, was a pulling test to determine if the engine could still roll relatively free.
