  • Hi mate, yeah body has taken a battering, still only 42 so not ready for scrapheap just yet!! Had three ops on the right knee but have more trouble with the back to be honest, every day that super duralay feels a little bit heavier!!!! I have checked out the yanks fitting, the stair fitting is a bit odd from bottom to top but tried it once and did seem tighter!!! But too slow. Work for family business in Norwich mate, starting to feel the strain now but always wore snickers with pads so knees s

  • @skitty311 alrite m8 25yrs in the game respect m8 how urs knees ha carpet fittings a hard game ive been doing it 12yrs now its taking its toll. where u from where do u work, have u seen on here how the yanks fit carpets ha u should watch interesting.

  • Good guide, been fitting 25 years and exactly what I do. In an ideal world we would screw the gripper into the cheap crap mdf but time wise would cost customer a fortune in labour. As the demonstrator points out the process of knocking in the carpet is way more damaging than knocking in a few wood pins and if your staircase cannot withstand it then it is not up to the job is it?? Good video mate.

  • @robertfinzy - I suggest you wind your neck in and get your facts straight before mouthing off at people you have never met. And no, I don't install stairs, I've just seen more than one staircase ruined by mindless hooligans masquerading as 'professional' carpet fitters. From you comments I assume you are one yourself!

  • @martinwinlow if you are saying it is wrong to hammer in the tiny nails in the gripper into the stairs then i would love to see your reaction when it comes to bolstering the carpet into the gripper on the stairs ha i take it you install stairs i suggest you try being professional and stop installing cheap crap and as for "mdf perfectly good" dont make me laugh nothing made from mdf is perfectly good.

  • I simply cannot believe that a professional tradesman would risk destroying the glued joints between tread and riser by using a hammer to bash the fixings in! Bad enough with a nice old, all-pine installation like the one in this video but with modern MDF this would be a recipe for ruining an otherwise perfectly good staircase.

So take out the nails in the gripper and put in 3-4mm c/s screws instead!
