@Nikos3000 cause honisty im being blunt here, the skill you 2 showed in that video, was crap, sword and buckler, honistly learn how to bloody use a buckler right and you should have killed the spearman 9/10 times with the smallest effort but all you did was hang back and just let him hit you and your trying to tell me you know how to fight with those weapons?? i felt like i was watching bloody rookies having a fight -.- rookies with no clue as to how to use the weapons in their hands

@Nikos3000 if your asking "highly skilled practitioners" who also use that style of fighting you demonstrated in that video, then no wonder, second, no shit its not in any book, cause most spearman arnt fighting on their own now are they? they are with other people either other spearmen or people with kiteshields, you can keep your "historical evidence" to pratice all you like, but in combat? if all you pratice is whats in a book, i sugest a better book, cause you suck at usin a spear

@njw161 One of the reasons. As well as very quick to teach its use to a highly effective level, unlike the sword. However it still the weapon of choice for many nobles, knights, and equivelent classes in the east, not because it was cheap, but because its great.
-
@njw161 No, you're missing the other key advantage, the speed of the tip. The speed of the disengage of a two hand spear means you can avoid most actions a sword ever makes and find openings. Once past the point is obviously the swordsmans fight, but that isn't the issue.

@njw161 Again, see previous comment. I love swords and train in them every week, but I'd take a spear against a sword in an unarmoured fight any day. I have seen these tests carried out by highly skilled fencers and instructors throughout my own club and top group across Europe, the spear always has the advantage and I am always happy to put this to the test.
-
@njw161 Sorry but that just isn't supported by either historical evidence or a vast array of highly skilled practitioners.

@Nikos3000 also the only reason a spear remained so popular was cause it was CHEEP and easy to use and required very little training and was easily made, it was a pointy piece of metal on a shaft of wood 9feet long or more in some cases, that is the reason behind its popularity

@Nikos3000 the only advantage a spear has, is range, and iv personaly killed alota spearman, WITHOUT a shield and i dont wear armour, of any kind, and i can take spearman apart without much trouble onces i get past the point, the point of a spear once your in its range yes, will kill you, but the second your past that point and running, the spearman is dead, i know cause iv lost count on the times iv done it and WON with only a sword
-
@Nikos3000 the "evidence" our talking about is on bones of dead people, if they was peasents knowing little better then i conced those would be effective as they wouldnt know what to do, but against someone who knows what they are doing, im sorry but in a one on one swordsman Vs spearman, the spearman is just gona die
-
@Nikos3000 the trick however is that if i know what your spear can do, i will be looking for it, and its very easy to block as spear with a sword, i dont even need a shield the second someone gets past the point of the spear, or grabs the spear behind the head of it, the fight is over and the spearman might aswell count the seconds he has to live, to crack a skull or break an arm the amount of force needed makes it to unreliable to use on a skilled enemy and therefor, useless
@SerenadeRage Yes, its very hard to break a spear with any kind of sword strike. Put it down between two objects so it is fixed and yes, but in the reality of a fight the persons body gives the spear some room to absorb impacts and the angles will rarely be right. Additionally. to make a cut strong enough to break a spear it would have to be a strong swing and that only plays to the strength of the spearman who will disengage and strike on the open line.

@ddrhazy Please see all previous discussion on the matter. The purpose was to show the an experienced swordsman without experience against a spear for the first time and immense threat it poses, which it does. Also to look at the psychological impact of facing a spear. Closing the distance with a rush is all very well when you treat it all as a game, think of it as a real fight with your life in danger and its a very different matter.
