I clicker trained an 8 year old chinchilla that has not had much human contact before. I did this using positive reinforcement and desensitisation. This was a project for my animal behaviour class at university. Although my assignment has been handed in I am still training the chinchilla and hope to be able to pick him up soon. Its a bit slow to start off with but he gets a lot friendlier towards the end :)

  • Would you be so kind as to tell us all what you are feeding your lovely chinchilla? Your video is really helpful in showing how much patience it takes. Thanks.

  • @Mrskerplunknable Hi there sorry I haven't replied sooner. I was just feeding him bits of his food - dry peas, sweetcorn, a tiny amount of raisin also.Just anything he likes really but everything in moderation!

  • Yeh I kind of figured the clicker was useless but the was the point in my project to see if the clicker would work. He is a lot more friendlier now and comes out so some good has come out of it.

  • wow ! That is so neat how it gets so friendly after so many attempts. You did very well with this chin. Good Job !

  • Thank you :)

  • did the clicker make him come out or if he bite you?

  • Thank you for this video! My chinchilla is skiddish like yours, I'd like to start training him, this helped a lot. How long did you train him for each night?

  • so cute!!!!!!

  • 2 questions: 1) Is the clicker specialized for Chinchilla, or any clicker, like used for dogs, is ok too? 2) How long did it take for you to achieve this? Like is the video showing a time span of 1 month? 2 months?

  • How long did it take to do all those attempts? I'm getting a chinchilla soon and I know he will take a while to get used to me.

  • lol that clicky thing scares the shit out of him lol

  • Thanks 4 sharing!

  • @babydegu chinchillas can react on sounds, but i think not on that ugly sound of ur clicker, mine just listen to special words, or the sound of the food bag

  • that looks really sad D: D:

  • Why would you brush him?
