Tokyo Earthquake 2011/3/11 東京地震

At about 2.50pm my JR train was just about to leave the station, then this happened. The lines would be stopped for the whole day, traffic gridlocked, cell phones down so people queued to use payphones. Restaurants did great business for those waiting. Aftershocks still felt hours after the first two big ones. 8.9 on the scale. Bigger than the great Kanto Earthquake of 1923!

I actually felt safer in the train. Just outside that door was the overhead walkway. It was a nervous few minutes waiting to see when it was going to stop.

@thabboy I wouldn't be surprised if that is true: the train is kind of a cage, so it's probably safer to be in there than out on the platform with all kinds of stuff that could fall down.

@MisoMichelle In the San Francisco Bay Area, We've been told that people on our BART system are safer in a train. Amazing.

In this case, people is safe in the train because there is not falling things from roof

WOW! Crazy! I would not want to be in the subway during that violent of a quake, but it looks to be that it was pretty safe. Glad everyone was okay down there.
