There died a myriad,
And of the best, among them,
For an old bitch gone in the teeth,
For a botched civilization,

Charm, smiling at the good mouth,
Quick eyes gone under earth's lid,

For two gross of broken statues,
For a few thousand battered books.

=== Ezra Pound

Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, a French sculptor, died aged 23 in 1915, fighting in the WWI. Here are his sculptures, as seen in Ken Russell's movie Savage Messiahю

  • the actor is completely misscasted. He has a fool's expression, not an iota of Gaudier's sensibility.

  • @Bogframe

    I have the movie, is wonderful, if you want I can give it to you, I also think it is among the best film ever seen, the only problem is that it is in Italian ..

  • I first saw this film in Paris when I was living abroad. This scene loses everything without knowing the whole story because it is at the very end. It was not particularly spoken about that much in the USA, It is very hard to find it anywhere- it is one of Ken Russell's best films.

  • Ken Russell must be the most neglected of all British film makers! So much of his work is now unavailable on dvd. It's a tragedy!

  • Oh Thanks for this!I seen this filmb4 but never noticed how it brings those sculptures to life! Wow!

  • I wish I could find a copy of this film, I've been in love with the book for over 35 years!

  • Excellent performance by Scott Antony, who also starred in The Mutations , Dead Cert , a brilliant Tv adaption in black an white of Colette's " Cheri " as the lead character (also sadily unavailable on DVD ) and the BBC series Angels ( also unavailable on DVD ) I agree the above is one of Ken Russells best movies.

  • I love this film (not to be confused with another film of the same name starring Polly Walker). This is my favorite Ken Russell flic and the best performance on film by a truly great (and virtually unknow in the U.S.) actress, Dorothy Tutin. Why isn't this available on DVD? A crime!!!!! Anyway, many thanks for posting this montage, which occurs very near the end of the flim.
