The ancient Hindus identified Brahman, the formless, eternal universal Self with space who can be reached only through the medium of sound. So they came up with the idea of using prayers and mantras to reach out to Him and other divinities who are but His aspects and lower manifestations. This video says we can practice space meditation and identify ourselves with space to overcome our mind body attachment and fixatin with the egoistic self.
God is the witness, the silent partner to every thing we do. It is wrong to believe that God exists only in the heaven. He is there all the time, with us around us. If you are mindful, you can feel His presence right now. Here is a small technique you can practice. Sit or lie down comfortably. Close your eyes. Feel your mind and body from toe to head, taking a few deep breaths. Now shift your attention to the space around you and inside you. Believe that space to be God. Actually It is God. It has all the attributes of God as described in the Upanishads. Pay attention to that space inside you and outside you. Feel its presence. Notice the point where your breath is entering the space. Think how the space is enveloping you, pressing upon you gently and imperceptibly. All that feeling to strengthen. Utter a prayer or mantra, any prayer or mantra. It does not matter. Utter it loudly. Watch as the sound from your mouth is entering the space, God's consciousness. Continue to breath slowly and deeply. Exhale and inhale, as you remain focused on the space. Now begin to identify yourself with the space. Feel the loving presence of space all around you and deep inside. Feel it and become one with. You are the formless space, without boundaries and without limitations. Continue to play with this thought for some time before you come out your meditation slowly. Sustain the thought that God is space enveloping you from all side even during waking hours.
