Dante's Prayer - Loreena McKennitt

Dante's Prayer
inspired by Dante's The Divine Comedy (a vernacular poem in 100 cantos), Loreena thinks about the human condition and how we all want to believe there is a place better than our own. An almost sorrowful and yet hopeful melody. Italian poet, Dante (1265-1321) gave an explanation of what happens after we die and this question is still just as controversial today.

Loreena McKennitt's haunting music combines a Russian Orthodox Easter hymn with her own music and imaginative lyrics about a prayer Dante might have uttered after he and Virgil had left Hell's icy center and were journeying close to the threshold between Hell and Purgatory.

These are all breathtaking pictures! You truly have some amazing talent. I'm a bit of a photographer myself, but I've never been able to capture something as richly as you have in these photos. And this song...my gosh, this song makes me break into tears every time I hear it because my grandfather would listen to it in his last days to bring him comfort and it makes me think of him. I heard this song in a dream about my mom. She died 13 years ago and I never cried. Listening to this song is the only time I'm able to actually relieve some of the emotions I have about it all. It's a beautiful song.

So incredibly beautiful and moving - what an amazing talent that Loreena has! I first heard this many years ago and even now, the first time in perhaps 8 years that I've revisited the track, it brings me to tears. The work is a consoling meditation on our mortality, seemingly with the gentle assurance that we live on in the memories of those we leave behind.
