Spring Equinox 2009: Chichen Itza, Yucatan, Mexico

Every equinox, thousands from all over the world gather at the restored Maya city of Chichen Itza to watch the feathered serpent Kukulcan crawl down the face of the pyramid El Castillo. In late afternoon, the sun strikes a corner of the pyramid and projects a series of shadows along the northern balustrade that resembles a wriggling snake. This year, the event was nearly ruined by clouds, but at the last instant the sun peeked through and Kukulcan emerged, to the delight of everyone (except, perhaps, the French).
