If you can't do this, then you have serious ADD - just stare at the X the ENTIRE time. Only use your peripheral to watch him. It's just the blind spot of your eye not being able to pick up the details of his face - the filling in of the rod and background color is a mental trick on your brain that had been developed since birth, compensating for the spot of vision we do not have.
