Impressive adaptation of the novel by Boris Pasternak. It manages to convey the main ideas, brilliantly portrays Doctor Zhivago's character and mood.
In Doctor Zhivago, the life of a young doctor is intertwined with the fate of Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. Yuri Zhivago is orphaned at a young age, and his uncle brings him to Moscow, where he studies medicine while living with his uncle's family. At the beginning of WWI, Doctor Zhivago goes to the front, leaving his wife and children in Moscow. Yuri Zhivago's personal drama plays out against a backdrop of social and historical upheaval, with his generation's hopes and desires wiped out by war and revolution...

I am very glad to have the opportunity to see this in Russian. I like the two British versions of 1964 and 2002 (I am not certain of the dates but you will know which films I mean). Maybe the Russian version will be closer to what Pastenak had in mind!

Thank you for uploading. It is good to see this version from the Russian perspective. If we put ourselves (Americans) in their shoes, maybe we would understand the extremely complex problems they were having during the revolution. It makes me want to visit Russia so bad now, I'm so glad the cold war is over!

I read the book and opted for watching this version, known to be the most faithful adaptation of the novel. I'm very disappointed. The vast majority of the scenes and dialogues are made up. Some of the scenes are simply vulgar and the attempts to humour are forced and tedious. Sometimes the dialogues are slow and come very close to the soap-opera style. A striking contrast with Pasternak's subtlety. I can't think of a single character of this film to resemble its part from the novel.

PS: Фильм заснят в Ярославле: есть сцены в Художественном музее, на Волжской набережной, у церкви Ильи Пророка и т.д. Лестница гостиницы с кованным ограждением – в Департаменте Городского Хозяйства.
