Donovan prefers to remember a fictional history of this song, but only JPJ was there in the sessions as arranger & bassist.

Hurdy Gurdy is a fantastic track but my god, what a bullshitter Donovan is....

Keep playing Jimmy! But Jimmy wasn't there! Must have been great drugs (or this guy is a bull shit artist!)

@stretchmorgan Like you, for years I thought it was Jeff Beck too but only because I'd been told it was. Jeff says he was in the States at the time it was recorded and so it definitely wasn't him. I agree with you though it's a great record. PS...I think Alan Parker wrote a lot of the music for the Muppet's!!!

@themagicwookster I think Donovan has always been a bit of a star struck ham. You can see it in "Don't Look Back". He's always banging on about his association with the Beatles now its about Led Zeppelin. Don't get me wrong, I like some of Donovan's music a lot. This is a brilliant record. He is super talented. I always understood that it was Jeff beck on this tune. Definitely sounds like him. It sound like a strat to me. Not something Page played much. I also believe this probably Clem Cattini.

Interestingly, though Donovan maintains that it was Jimmy Page, Jimmy says he wasn't there at all and that Alan Parker played the guitar part. John Paul Jones also says it was Alan Parker and it was Jones (after all) who hired Parker for the session.
