The Buddha's teaching of Anâtman (lit., not-the-self) means that my psycho-physical body consisting of material shape, feeling, perception, habitual tendencies, and sensory consciousness is not my true self or âtman. The Buddha also said: Abandon desire for what is not the âtman or self" (S. iii. 78).

“The Buddha said the true self is always illuminating as Buddha. It is not limited to subject, object; it is beyond. True illumination is beyond subject and object. It is Buddha-nature. — Joshu Sasaki Roshi [Zen Notes XVIII No. 8]
