Using Curves in Photoshop to get more vintage looking colours - where the blacks fade to a dark blue/purple and whites fade to a creamy yellow.

Not exactly - color balance won't give you quite as much control or flexibility. I'm sure it could get a vintage effect with it if you tried though.
