AU: Blair and Serena have been dating for a while when Blair suffers major head trauma and is rendered into a catatonic state. Serena is quick to rush to Blair's bedside, only to witness firsthand how lifeless Blair's become. She is then told by Blair's doctor, Dr. Hadley, that Blair may never leave this 'suspended' condition, and that she is likely to become brain dead. (* I actually have no idea if this is possible, so don't get caught up in the medical details of this scenario. :S )
Serena, not one for facing reality or conflict, decides to flee the scene before she has a chance to watch Blair sink further into comatose. She would rather remember her B as she was before, not the puddy she's becoming. Serena is barely out of the city when Blair Waldorf proves medical science wrong.
As Blair gasps out of the prison she was locked in, Serena's heading for a town far, far away from her fears and her true love. She leaves behind no information; there is no way the doctors can inform her that Blair is alive and kicking. There is no way Blair can run into her arms and tell her she loves her.
-------
One year has past and Serena is still living in the small town she fled to after Blair's accident. She's been living alone, with her demons and dreams, thinking of Blair at all moments. Serena's about to eat at her favorite cafe when she spots a familiar figure making her way to the counter. She watches through the window, curious to see if it was her mind playing tricks on her again (as it relentlessly does) or if what she's been hoping for has finally found her.
Indeed she was right, although a bit older looking and with a different hair color, the girl through the glass is her one and only Blair-bear. Happy memories rush through her like a hurricane and Serena's heart and mind are suddenly at odds. Her instinct is telling her to bolt through the door and clutch onto Blair as if the world depends on it, but her head is telling her that she has no right. She left during Blair's darkest hour, the time that she needed her the most. So Serena does what she does best. She leaves.
But not quick enough. Blair catches sight of her hasty form before she's out of range of vision.
It takes a couple of days, but Blair finally finds Serena again. See, for the past year that's all Blair's been doing. Serena's her whole life, and even though she left her, Blair concluded that she at least deserved an explanation as to why S abandoned her.
Serena explains that she was just afraid, afraid of getting her heart crushed. That if she left before she saw Blair's downfall, she could just pretend it was never gonna happen. She could just imagine that Blair was happy and healthy in a faraway city. She left behind no number because she never wanted to get that call - the call saying that it's time to pick out caskets and flowers.
Blair understood all this, but was still very hurt that Serena left her at all. Now to get things back to normal, there is only one first step Serena can make. To say what Blair has been wanting to hear since she got out of the hospital. 3 words, 8 letters.
