Joyce DiDonato singing Dopo Notte, Ariodante, George Frederic Handel
Amsterdam, encore, 7-12-08

----------------------------------
Dopo notte atra e funesta,
splende in ciel più vago il sole
e di gioia empie la terra.

Mentre in orrida tempesta
il mio legno è quasi assorto,
giunge in porto e 'l lido afferra.

After a dark and terrible night,
the sun shines more brightly in the sky
and fills the earth with joy.

My ship, having been almost engulfed
in the dreadful storm,
gains harbour and reaches the shore.

  • I must have been nearly sitting next to this person in the Concertgebouw! While I frown upon illegal recordings, I'm grateful that you made this one. I LOVED this concert.

  • ''While I frown upon illegal recordings" Why on earth? Live recordings made with simple cameras are often so much more real. Thank god some ppl don't mind these commercial barriers. Like my german friend Gudrun74, who happened to sit beside me then. So maybe you sat beside her (left half) as I had some dutch ppl sitting next to me. Thanks for reminding me again of this indeed stunning performance. Must listen more to it.

  • Her GIOIA , swings like the terrific scat of Ella FITZGERALD in AIR MAIL SPECIAL or I CAN'T GIVE YOU ANYTHING BUT LOVE !

  • Einach wunderbar!!!

    Mehr davon!!!

  • Absolutely gorgeous!

  • she's okay, Vivica is still the best though. I have to say, she cracks at times (in fact she cracked like 3 times when she sang Dejanira at BAM under W. Christie. Still great voice though but not all that.

  • She's one of the very few who can successfully articulate the italian diction PROPERLY.... For the rest, brillance and panache are quite explicite here. Brava Joyce!!!

  • I can imagine it's not easy in the NL not to get lost in the abundance of great concerts you are offered all the time. And your absolutely unique concert halls build the perfect frame. First, I found it a pity that this concert wasn't TV broadcast, whereas they bore us with whatever sports event. But on the other hand, I'm happy these concerts are not totally over-commercialized yet. At least we have the encore videos here, that's quite sth :-) Thanks again. I love comparing different versions.

  • Don't forget you played a major role in the whole, while putting my attention to her performing here, and next to that, more importantly, you were my 'alibi' to make this movie, which I hadn't dared when sitting next to a stranger. Glad to have been able to be to your (and maybe more) assistance.

  • [2] And applause to your courageousness, Joop, to film her in Concertgebouw (one of the few concert halls where I'd be too cowardish to film)! This theatre should LOVE you for that. You made the best promotion they could get.
