Yes, you are correct. the gear will carry it around to 6:30 as the distributor is seated.

I think my distributor is in wrong because my 86 firebird backfires through the carb now. Could this be the problem?

I agree with the comments posted, out 5:30 - in 6:30? I know the oil pump drive won't realign upon reassembly but there is a better solution for that rather than changing your distributor housing position.

what do you mean 5:30 and 6:30?

out at 6:30 in at 5:30? I guess that is to take in that the gear will move it to 6:30?
