During a weekend visit to Leeds we took a quick trip out to Castleford and Milford to intercept The Coast to Coast Express hauled by Black 5 45305 (and enjoy the bacon butties at Aunty's Cafe). Castleford is now the end of the line for most passenger trains - the footbridge is unsafe and the down platform closed. The old signalbox...well, it's evocative. Magpies chatter, collared doves coo, advice is dispensed; then a Class 66 growls by running light, and rattles over the junction. The unit from Leeds to Knottingley squeals in and rumbles out and the points change. I'm taking a wander and the steamer arrives - 10 minutes early! and heads off for it's water stop, just a few miles down the line.

  • platform closed 1970 I think - although the line is used for freight and diversions - there are (were) plans to build a new bus station next door and make it a transport hub but it' seems to be on hold - there's a lot on Wikipedia
