You're right that they're two distinct species, confusion occurs because Coaly or Coalfish is called Pollock in the US. Proper Pollock, which doesn't occur in US coastal waters, is easily distinguished by it's bronze colour and protruding lower jaw. Spelling wise, I'm happy with Coaly, that's the spelling in all my literature.

That's coaly, very firm flesh probably the best tasting of the cod family but it's undervalued because the flesh can be grey coloured.
