Could you plug something into an av socket so it could utilise an external mic?

I don't think so. Theese AV ports are outputs only for monitoring.

An AV port sounds like an Output (to your TV), you need a Mic INPUT.

my camera has a av port. (audio visual i believe) cam i plug in a mic into that port?

Every camera has Some mircophone imput. But what your going to need is ELR adapter. Thats way you can use pretty much any mircophone
