Magnificat for soloists, chorus, orchestra & organ in C major, D. 486 (1815)
Performed by Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra
with Brigitte Fassbaender, Lucia Popp, Elmar Schloter, Adolf Dallapozza, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau
Conducted by Wolfgang Sawallisch
The Magnificat, D 486 is a lesser known work by Franz Schubert. It was composed in 1815 for Soloists, Chorus, Orchestra and Organ. Although the reason for its composition is unknown, the Magnificat was intended for performance at the parish church in the Viennese suburb of Lichtenthal, with which the composer felt closely associated. The work, originally in the key of C Major, is conceived in three movements. This is a rousing, festive, joyous, celebratory work.

This one was not written for Anglican/Episcopal use, where Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis go together (for example in Vespers/evensong!) - it was composed for Catholic Use and they only have the Magnificat in their Vespers! But anyway - he left out some lines of the Magnificat, as he did quite often in his litugical music! That´s because, he was religious, but not in "ecclesiastic" sense!

A big favourite of mine ... what a pity he didn't include the rest of the Magnificat. And what about the Nunc Dimittis?
