Palliative care is a medical subspecialty that helps patients and families facing life limiting illnesses.
Palliative care focuses on physical, psychological, spiritual and social aspects of life-changing illnesses. The medical team includes a physician, a nurse practitioner, social work and pastoral care. Working with the primary care physician, this team compassionately assists patients and families at a time that can seem overwhelming.
Dr. Todd Sauer and nurse practitioner Carri Siedlik explain that while there are similarities between palliative care and hospice, they are different. Palliative care is available to anyone in the hospital and is not limited to the end of a patient's life.
