Program Summary And Objectives: "Millions of American today receive health care for mental or substance-use problems and illnesses. These conditions are the leading cause of combined disability and death of women and the second highest of men." "Improving the Quality of health Care for Mental and Substance-Use Conditions," Institute of Medicine Report, November 1, 2005; Studies are showing an alarming trend, incidents of mental illness related to drug use are on the rise. It's unclear what came first, did a predisposition to mental illness lead to drug use, or is it the other way around? No matter what, co-occurring disorders are a problem. Especially in the wake of this year's hurricanes and other disasters, mental health and substance abuse professionals need to be poised to provide additional care for those suffering serious mental trauma and who may turn to alcohol and drugs as a result. During this hour-long broadcast, hear from treatment providers about the delicate balance between treating a person's addiction and his or her mental illness. We'll also learn about the stigma attached to mental illness and how coalitions can help fight it. Hear from representatives of the American Psychiatric Association about the group's advocacy of comprehensive and non-discriminatory health insurance coverage of mental illness and substance abuse disorders. Learning Objectives: Define co-occurring disorders; Learn about the difficulty treating co-occurring disorders; Discover solutions to the problems both communities and patients face; See how community-based organizations can help improve the local climate to assist those in recovery from substance use disorders and mental health problems;

  • I have some sort of mental issue but Its hard to even describe what it is. I will wake up for instance in middle of night and I am freaking out over basically nothing. I had a cold feeling in my throat one night for example and I was freaking out and pacing back and fourth and had the urge to scream . My wife tries to tell me I am freaking out over nothing and I agree with her. But something in my mind tells me to keep doing it and I cant control it. What is this?I cant keep this up. Please help

  • MrOctavion2z, not being to sleep properly is a common sympton of clinical depression. You should consult your doctor. Regards...

  • rather than attempting (and failing if you know how available drugs are to people) to get rid of drugs that can and are used in medical treatment, like cannabis, opiates, and cocaine, why not strive to make the world a better place and try to eliminate the true cause of mental illness, excessive stress induced by life sucking.

  • Please don't listen to the morons below! If you have a problem go see a counselor. Maybe you need meds and maybe you don't, but a professional opinion is much more reliable than these rants.

  • we have many facilities and doctors to help patient suffering from this condition but there are over flowing number of abuser who denied to be treated

  • It looks that the drug/acholic abuser are lack of the basic self restraint.

  • So i dont really know why people are bashing this video..I have these problems/diseases and I could relate to things the "professionals" were saying. I mean the one lady seems to get more of a focus and reveals her own recovery stuff...thats admirable I think...but if I shouldnt listen to these people tell me why. That medical stabilization place sounds like somewhere I need to be. im really fucking sad and angry and hateful so what should I do besides use?!?!

  • @MrOctavion2z I realise its over two years since you made this post. Did you ever get a handle on what was happening to you or did you get it under control?

  • personal and touching story!!!

  • this is so boring Im gonna jump off a bridge..see ya!

  • The hostess of this film has the personality of a stump .........

  • these "professionals" are the least likely to be accurate or honest. They make their living off the suffering of others. They prescribe to a paradigm that offers little hope and almost no chance of recovery. In fact their industry is in the back pocket of the big pharmaceutical companies who's only interest is in obtaining and RETAINING customers not in recovery and succesful treatment.This show is more of a testament to their egos than helping others.
