This is me playing "Sonata for a good man" from The Lives of Others, the scene where Dreyman finds out Jerska has hung himself which he then proceeds to play this beautiful piece of music.

Would've been an awesome scene to re-enact (especially for the English speaking subtitle fearing audience) except I don't have people who share such a vision around me.

"Do you know what Lenin said about Beethoven's Appassionata"
"If I keep listening to it I won't finish the Revolution."
"Can anyone who has heard this music, I mean truly heard it,really be a bad person?"

See my video for where this part came from:

I only managed to get my hands on the sheet music after two years of searching for it since I first saw the film.

  • Very nicely done! I really, really wish the composer had actually written a whole sonata. I know if I had written a short bit of music this sublime for a movie, I'd want to "finish" it. BTW, the actor who played Dreyman took piano lessons every day and practiced this piece for four hours every day to learn it. (He didn't play piano at all before.) And even though the camera panned away from his hands very quickly after he started playing, he insisted on playing it all himself.

  • @karenhunter58 The piece Sonata for a good man is actually 5 pages long. Only the last 2 pages were played and heard in the film.

  • great wonderfull!

but the quality of sound is a bit shrill

  • Thanks. Yea I know its a bit shrill. I play on a Yamaha piano. Its a good piano and it serves me well but I think I do prefer the more mellow and warm sounds of European pianos.

  • @andrewpn I have a Yamaha UX5 upright and it has a really mellow rich tone, much more so than the U3's or any others I played. Which model is that one you are playing? It's a grand?

  • @WelcomeGhosts73

    I play on a Yamaha U1 upright.
