Do dancing shows on television leave you hankering for more? If you're serious about a dance career, follow these steps.

To complete this How-To you will need:

A passion for dancing
Talent

Step 1: Take classes

Take daily classes to maintain top physical condition and push your skills to the limit. Ballet dancers usually begin training as children, while dancers in other disciplines can begin as adults.

Step 2: Write your dance resume

Develop a resume of dance experience. Include professional, amateur, or student productions and information about your training.

Step 3: Get photos

Get an 8-by-10 headshot as well as a dance photo. Use an experienced professional photographer.

Step 4: Go to auditions

Find and go to auditions. In auditions, you perform exercises and combinations for a director or choreographer. Auditions can be fiercely competitive. Remember that rejection is a part of every dancer's process.

Tip: Learn how to handle mistakes. Professionals recover from missteps quickly -- and do it right the next time.

Step 5: Gain experience

Audition for experimental troupes and emerging choreographers, who often work with less experienced dancers. Then go out for more established companies.

Tip: A non-physical part-time or day job will allow you to concentrate on dancing.

Step 6: Avoid injury

Take care of yourself. Eat right, stay hydrated, take daily classes, and work with physical therapists to avoid injury.
