carpenters' version is the best, imo. karen sings it so smoothly and with a lot of emotion without screaming her brains out.

The remake of The Shirelles 1962 hit was huge in 1969 & early 1970 for the band originally called Gayle McCormick and The Underhand Band,Signed by ABC Dunhill they became SMITH,one hit wonders.Gayle McCormick would later resurface in 1972 with her solo hit It,s A Cryin shame also on ABC DUNHILL where she became a solo one hit wonder..

@RTT8001 interesting comment and I agree, so much fresh, original, gutsy music in the 60s and 70s, but by the standards of the day it was average. Todays music it's 7 different shades of commercial formulaic shit
