This is a very "uncut" version of how male deer behave during the mating season ("rut"). Two fallow bucks happened to start fighting right in front of me as I was taking stills of deer in the area, and I got a very (scary!) close-up view of how these deer decide their pecking order.

  • :) Sorry about the response above, then! Should have thought of that. Still ... cameras are very cool ... ;)

  • great vid, iv just come back from a red deer hunt which went well, was lucky enough to come across two stags roaring each other in with me in the cross fire although nothing like this happend and i ended up shooting one of the 2, but im due to go on a fellow deer hunt in may at the start of their rut would you have any advice as to replicating the sound? as its quite alot different to the old red stag roar (sounds more like trying to start a chainsaw with the spark plug off)

  • Well, since it's not hunting season, and since the rut doesn't start until September, and since male deer don't have antlers right now, and therefore since anyone shooting deer at this time of year risks shooting a mother with fawns who will starve ... I think I'll just pass on commenting here, except: Try a camera. More fun, and you can enjoy that sparkplug roar without having to stop it forever.

  • buck standing in the back ground is just waiting and waiting

  • Not his fight, I guess. :) There are quite a number of bucks that have stands on that same patch of hillside. It's quite crowded during the rut.

  • What is the least legal caliber to use on fallow deer in America here in Australihave to ua we se a 243 Or above

  • I couldn't tell you -- I shoot with a camera now :). I know for euthanasia purposes we used to use a .22 or .38, but that was in pretty close quarters, for dispatching road casualties.
