When actor John Payne slapped actress Rhonda Fleming in the 1956 film noir "Slightly Scarlet" and then uttered the words "Big girls don't cry", little did anyone realize that those words would end up being the inspiration for the #1 song in the nation during November of 1963. Written by Bob Gaudio and Bob Crewe, "Big Girls Don't Cry" was the second consecutive #1 single for the Four Seasons (after "Sherry").
