This Demo is to show that Newton's first law of motion is true. Using Galileo's "Law of Inertia" the sledge hammer releases its potential energy (converting it into kinetic energy) as it is swung downward with the help of gravity and applied force. The 1st law comes into effect as the cinder block opposes the motion of the hammer. It absorbs the energy and, it being weaker, explodes. This explosion is the equal and opposite reaction, thus providing us with evidence of Newton's third law. Meanwhile the teacher is safe and the bed of nails did not harm him because no energy was actually transferred to the board. That didn't stop the debri from smashing into his jaw though...
