(Comparing to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Af372EQLck) this elegant, non-melancholic and joyful version keeps emotional depth while revealing the ingenious structure of the whole piece. Like some other pieces (for example the basic "Prelude I" of J.S. Bach´s "Well-tempered clavier I") the brilliant canon can work when played slowly or rapidly.

Karajan respects and adheres to the original ideas/score of Pachelbel : the "basso continuo" is played by the violoncellos/cembalo, the other three voices of the string chamber orchestra are distributed among the strings of the philharmonic orchestra.

Most of the photos were taken at the Lago di Garda/Italy and Nymphenburg Castle/Germany, 2011.

  • Those chords at 3:06 and 3:21 ..give me chills

  • The most breathtaking version in my opinion. It moves at a determined and joyous pace, making each instrument beautifully enhanced. Check out Von Karajan conducting the Brandenberg concertos by Bach !! outstanding

  • AlecPerkey was this version is so good...and I think of her even more!!!!

  • Much better than the other recording. This is about as good as pachelbel gets. It's still the most overrated and overdone tune in existence though, I'm afraid. It's simple and a little cute, but ultimately boring when you've heard it so many times. I wouldn't get too hung up about finding the correct instrumentation, even though the other recording appropriated the tune very poorly. A facelift wouldn't do this piece any harm. A trumpet which didn't crack every second note would not be ill placed

  • I read your comment on the other Canon video and decided to take a look at your upload. Simply marvelous. I must admit that I find the other version beautiful as well, but this one took me entirely by surprise. 3:36 felt as if a bolt of lightning surged through me and tears raced down my face. Not often this has happened and I'm and thankful that it did. This version conveyed emotion efficiently and flawlessly.

    Thank you for the upload.
