As the communists pushed further forward the South Vietnamese Army retreated along Highway 1 with some soldiers walking until they were picked up and others who were too badly wounded had to stay where they were until rescued.

President Thieu made a big mistake by ordering this strategic retreat in hope that the US will send help, but the US abandoned its ally.

You should read some of their books recounting what happened. I've heard of at least two reporters who were with US soldiers who were under heavy attack and were actually given an M-16 and told to shoot, which they had to otherwise they would've been over-run.
