This song, sung to the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat, is meant to familiarize children with the terms "vowel" and "consonant" and to help them remember which letters are vowels. A good follow up activity is to have the children locate vowels in a given text and highlight them with a yellow crayon.

Even in England, Y is a consonant only when it makes the sound you hear in yellow or yo-yo. Y is a vowel when it makes either of the sounds you hear at the end of cry or penny. It is also a vowel when it is part of the vowel digraph ay as in maybe.

@Grancie48 And may I add in the middle of a word such as "syllable" or "cyst" as an "i" substitute. :)

What do you mean by 'and then sometimes y' because y isn't a vowel.
