The "Butterflies in Space" experiment by BioServe Space Technologies at the University of Colorado. This experiment was made possible through the support of the National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI) and the Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). Larvae and technical assistance provided by Monarch Watch, Butterfly Pavilion, and Clearwater Butterfly.
A time-lapse video of a monarch inflating its wings without the aid of gravity. It takes longer than usual, but seems to get them mostly inflated. Close examination reveals the tips are slightly bent. This could be damage from attempting to fly in the small habitat, or it could be related to not having the luxury of hanging from the ceiling while they pump their wings for the first time.
