We're trying cloth diapers not for the environment, but for our wallets. None of the fancy enzymes removers or prefolds. Just the old fashion cloth and diaper pins. My husband figures if it was good enough for him and his 11 siblings, it's good enough for our baby too. My one request was that at night and when we go out, to still use the disposables. We shall see how this goes.

@robbert4u It sounds like you had the wrong cloth diapers for your family, or there were some other use issues, like perhaps detergent problems or diaper rash cream problems (both cause waterproofing, leaking and smelling if you don't have cloth-diaper friendly products). The majority of my young mama friends have been cloth diapering, and all give rave reviews--even curing chronic diaper rash caused by chemicals in disposables. I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but it really isn't the norm!

@Seattlecarnut I wish my husbands home would use them but they won't. :( Heck I think it would be easier on the CNAs. Instead of taking so much trash out all day just throw everything in a huge diaper pail. I guess you just to have someone willing to WASH them. I think that's the tricky part. It's different with your own childs poo and pee but I think people get weirded out by other peoples.

@carlynicoleelliotte Nice. I've heard of adult-sized cloth diapers. Unfortunately, I don't know of any nursing homes in my area (Seattle, Washington) that offers cloth diapers.

@Seattlecarnut They DO make cloth diapers for adults. My husbands and his family own and operate a nursing home and I have looked into it myself. They use disposables there but they DO make them for the adults who want and need them! :)

I live in Portugal and there is absolutely no recycling of disp. diapers. In my previous house, we didn't even have a septic tank, the water from the washing machine just went straight out the window! I've now moved to a town that does have a sewer system, so I think that reusables are the best option for me here. It all depends on your lifestyle and as robbert4u is right, there's no right or wrong way.

@robbert4u Ridiculous. Maybe it's time for you to invest in an eco friendly washer and dryer too. But personally I think you just want to defend "your way" I don't think theres really a right or wrong on this topic, just a more environmentally friendly way. And, disposable diapers are not recycled.

@robbert4u Cloth diaper leaks? Mine don't leak. What style were you using that you had leaks? And, it only takes about a tablespoon of Tide to wash them--that's not expensive at all.

Are you crazy?? Do you have any idea how much water and electricity goes into the manufacturing of disposable diapers?
"In 1991, an attempt towards recycling disposable diapers was made in the city of Seattle, involving 800 families, 30 day care centers, a hospital and a Seattle-based recycler for a period of one year. The conclusion made by Procter & Gamble was that recycling disposable diapers was not an economically feasible task on any scale."
