Polka is Czech dance which became popular in central Europe. I can't understand why even polish minority in America thinks it's of polish roots:/. Polish folk music are i.e. oberek, kujawiak, polonez etc. I think more interesting sounds. I'd recommend polish metal band Żywiołak based on obereks and others or more folk Orkiestra św. Mikołaja based on folk music of central Poland and west Ukraine.

To be honest, Eastern European music travelled between countries so much, that it all became mixed. Folk, klezmer, polka, gypsy music share music from many countries. Polka or polksa is how the people and music from Poland are referred to in many countries. There is an ancient tradition of traveling musicians from all of Poland, Czech, and many other countries.
