Monumental recording !!!
He was not only his pupil ...
Some rumors say that he was his son from some Liszt adventure !!!
The fact is that thanks to Emil von Sauer we have a rich heritage of his Liszt's Editions.
Thanks for posting ths music.

Wonderful. One can really hear what liszt's students have in common. Amazing how one man changed what piano-playing is all about.
Interesting to compare this with the wonderful Raoul Koczalski, who comes from Chopin's tradition, so different in approach to touch and rubato.
One can almost imagine the characteristics of those two giants through their students. Please post more.

EMIL GEORG CONRAD VON SAUER (October 8, 1862 – April 27, 1942) was a notable German composer, pianist, score editor, and music (piano) teacher.

The conception of interpretation of Sauer is so strong. You have the impression he has control of the whole. Its not putting parts together but a unity . His deep understanding of the music sheets shows his ability as a composer too. I recommend to everybody to listen to the compositions Sauer wrote himself. As a pupil of Liszt he is the one who is the bridge to Gustav Mahler.. A true treasure of european culture.

Extraordinario!!!! :)

If you want to hear a truly lyrical rendition that is both beautiful and technically superior I suggest you listen to the Jorge Bolet recording live at Carnegie Hall in 1974, From a pianist's standpoint it's the best I've ever heard. Better even than Lhevinne

@billyguns2 I think there is two, i don't know the second.
Sorry, I used to be Irishpianoman1996.
-
@billyguns, this IS the Schultz-Evler transcription. Lhevinne truncates his performance of the same work on his acoustic record (omitting the intro and a section later on). Sauer plays more of the original transcription.

@IrishPianoMan1996 Excuse me, but this is not the same transcription by Schulz Evler that Josef Lhevinne plays in his memorable recording; are there two transcriptions?

Ah! Yes, my mistake.
