Mummering has a long history in Newfoundland, I would go out mummering myself at home.

During Christmas, people dressed up in silly clothes and covered faces would visit people's homes and entertain the residents with dancing and music. After the residents guess everyone's identities, the mummers would be rewarded with treats, alcoholic beverages, and purity syrup.

In small communities like the one I am from, this was the closest thing to a pub-crawl you could get to since there are no bars.

  • Man, that looks fun! It's a shame we don't have anything like this on PEI.

  • Nice. My mom and uncle and a few others mummered at the house back in 2002.
