Hip Hop is based on two simple elements, a beat and a voice. These core elements can resonate with folk music traditions found around the world. "World Up! Refugee Youth" is a project that uses music to create a cross cultural dialogue between refugee students and the public. Students will explore the social and political context of their countries of origin and how these issues have created a refugee population. Students will express what they discover through hip hop, writing and art and share their works to connect them with their local communities. Through after-school writing workshops, "World Up! Refugee Youth" will promote literacy and self expression among refugee youth in NYC.
