CARE Tanzania launched a pilot project in Mwashepi, Mwanza, Tanzania aimed at improving maternal health outcomes through the provision of a motorized tricycle to transport pregnant women presenting with obstetric emergencies and complications to higher level health facilities in the district/region. This was a solution identified by the community through a series of stakeholder meetings in fall 2009. The vehicle was presented to the village on February 10, 2010. This video captures the community excitement and warm reception of the vehicle into the community.
This project has been made possible through the generous fundraising assistance of a visiting Pfizer Global Health Fellow, Alexandria Osbourne, and with technical assistance on sustainable emergency transportation management provided by Meghan Mattingly, a visiting Boren Fellow from the University of Illinois at Chicago's Masters in Urban Planning and Policy Program.
